Indonesia Coral Reef Garden (ICRG) was initiated in 2016 and launched on 7 October 2018 in Nusa Dua Bali through the IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting. ICRG is under the coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (CMMAI) of the Republic of Indonesia. ICRG is a national coral reef rehabilitation center that synergizes scientific and socio-economic aspects in coral reef restoration for sustainability and utilization through Edu-Eco Tourism. There are 3 Main Pillars of ICRG, namely, Research and Innovation, Breeding and Transplantation, Community Empowerment and Creative Economy.
As part of the ICRG activities, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment launched the ICRG National Economic Recovery Program (PEN) in October 2020 in Bali. This program was developed as an economic stimulus and emergency response during the COVID-19 pandemic: restoring coral reefs and reviving marine tourism in Bali. To date, the restoration area has reached 74.3 hectares and the program has employed around 10,171 local stakeholders and communities, especially those affected by Covid-19 in the marine and tourism sector in five locations, namely, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Pandawa, Attack, and Central Buleleng.
The implementation of the ICRG will continue from now on throughout Indonesia in coral reef restoration areas to support the Government's efforts in the sustainable management of coastal and marine ecosystems. All stakeholders, volunteers, donors, are welcome to be more involved in the ICRG program.
